About the Department

Formed in Fall 2018, LGBTQ+ Western’s mission is to advance the holistic thriving of diverse LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff by collaboratively engaging the university community with transformational knowledge, resources, advocacy, and celebration. In all work, LGBTQ+ Western is committed to engaging topics of sexual orientation and gender identity as they intersect with other aspects of identity and experience, including race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, and religion.

LGBTQ+ Western is part of the Enrollment and Student Services division’s new Access, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Unit, which is also home to Multicultural Student Services and the Disability Access Center. About the Position

The LGBTQ+ Director oversees and provides a wide array of services for students, and for faculty and staff in support of students, and engages with community partners beyond the university to build vibrant and thriving LGBTQ+ community. In their work, the Director engages with partners across the division as well as student leaders, faculty, and academic administrators. The Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Access, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Job Duties

Administration (25%)

  • As part of the ADEI Unit leadership team, collaborate on development, implementation, and assessment of Unit-wide strategic planning, programming, and teambuilding.

  • Provide visionary leadership that carries out the mission and goals of LGBTQ+ Western, refreshes departmental strategic plan on a regular basis, and assesses the department’s progress toward goals. Conduct CAS self-studies.

  • Assemble and regularly convene Advisory Group to the LGBTQ+ Director.

  • Recruit, develop, supervise, and evaluate staff and student employees.

  • Develop and monitor the LGBTQ+ Western budget. Exercise budget authority, operate within budget guidelines, and use organization resources effectively.

  • Collaborate with University Advancement on external funding opportunities and building the LGBTQ+ Western Advancement Fund.

  • Serve on division and institution level committees, including the Bias Response Team, Gender-Affirming Care Team, and Pride Housing Advisory Committee.

Program Development and Implementation (50%)

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate educational, cultural, and social programs supporting positive identity development, leadership development, and academic success for diverse LGBTQ+ students.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for students, faculty, and staff to advance learning about diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity as they intersect with other aspects of identity and experience, and to increase LGBTQ+ inclusion in curriculum, pedagogy, and delivery of services.

  • Manage the collection and evaluation of program data. Prepare reports evaluating program outcomes and effectiveness

  • Lead development of and provide guidance to other areas of the university regarding policies, procedures, and practices that promote equity and inclusion for diverse LGBTQ+ students.

  • In consultation with the Assistant Vice President, establish collaborative partnerships at Western and in the community that further university and department goals and the well-being of our community.

Student Development and Outreach (25%)

  • Oversee communication and marketing, including social media, to support positive identity development, promote programming, and increase understanding about topics of import to diverse LGBTQ+ people.

  • Provide assistance, referrals, and resource information to students as needed.

  • Outreach to university groups including prospective and incoming students, new faculty, student clubs, academic departments and colleges, and alumnx to advance a welcoming and inclusive student experience for diverse LGBTQ+ students.

  • Fulfill public speaking opportunities that further the mission and goals of LGBTQ+ Western.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field, for example Higher Education Administration, Sociology, Ethnic or Cultural Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Human Services/Social Work, Political Science, Equity and Diversity in Law, or Policy Studies.
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible successful experience working in higher education or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and assess programs, curricular and co-curricular activities, workshops, and large events.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with LGBTQ+ communities, including experience working effectively with LGBTQ+ people of diverse racial and ethnic identities and LGBTQ+ people with disabilities.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship building skills, with demonstrated ability to build trusting working relationships with a broad range of diverse students, faculty, and staff to advance equity and inclusion for LGBTQ+ students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current literature and theories of student development, anti-oppression work, and strategies for creating inclusive environments, with ability to apply theory to student affairs practice.
  • Demonstrated experience advancing equity and inclusion in community with people who hold multiple marginalized identities.
  • Strong small and large group facilitation skills and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions that align with organizational mission and goals.
  • Demonstrated fiscal management skills, including experience monitoring budgets.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising permanent employees and student employees.
  • Professional experience in a college or university LGBTQ+ or Multicultural Student Services office or program.
  • Professional experience developing and collaborating to implement higher education policies and procedures, structures, and systems.

Salary
$76,005 – $88,672 depending on experience and qualifications
