The University of Alabama Libraries seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking professional to serve as a Project Archivist. This is a clinical appointment reporting to the Associate Dean for Special Collections and working collaboratively in an archival team of archivists and librarians, as well as archival and digital initiatives staff in Special Collections. The position supports access to and preservation of University Libraries rare and unique resources, including manuscript and photo collections, rare published materials, historic maps, and University records, through physical arrangement and intellectual description while continually striving toward the unit’s goals of More Product, Less Process (MPLP). This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate or early career librarian to gain an expert knowledge of all archival operations and practices as a ranked faculty member in an R1 university Special Collections unit.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to: processing manuscript and photo collections, including physical arrangement of varied formats of materials; creating finding aids and metadata; maintaining content in the unit’s archival data management system ArchivesSpace; accessioning collections; managing authorities and rights; evaluating content of materials; applying preservation strategies; providing reference service; and keeping up-to-date on current issues and trends in arrangement, description, preservation, and assessment of manuscript collections. This position also learns valuable skills in teaching library instruction for primary source materials and performing outreach activities for Special Collections, as well as creating physical and digital exhibits for display within University Libraries and for the global research community. Responsibilities of the position change as the University Libraries continue to evolve.

Required Qualifications:
- Masters in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current archival content and structure standards.
- Demonstrated knowledge of metadata creation and standards.
- Demonstrated understanding of More Product, Less Process (MPLP) as well as other intensive processing and assessment strategies.
- Demonstrated understanding implementing basic preservation standards for archival collections.
- Experience working independently and collaboratively with varied groups within a complex organization.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional experience processing manuscript and/or photo collections, including physical arrangement and creation of finding aids in accordance with archival best practices.
- Organizational and project management skills.
- Experience working with ArchivesSpace or other archival data management system.
- Knowledge of HTML and experience with WordPress for content management.
- Experience working with born digital collections.
- Experience creating physical exhibits.
- Knowledge of and experience working with photographic formats.
- Reading proficiency in Spanish or another European language.

BENEFITS: 12 month clinical faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor rank. Salary range is $52,000.00 – $65,000.00, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and advanced degrees. Strong benefits, including professional development support, tuition fee waiver, and matching retirement contributions.
