Overview

The primary responsibilities include: providing supervision to a classroom of children; planning and implementation of a developmentally appropriate and emergent curriculum; support the assessment of young children; work with a diverse population of children and families.

Position Summary

It is expected that the Child Development Supervisor (lead teacher) will be present at the Child Development and Family Center (CDFC) for the majority of each day to ensure that licensing and NAEYC Accreditation requirements are met and oversee daily operations in the classroom.

Job responsibilities will be performed in consultation and collaboration with the CDFC Director, HDFS Faculty/the CDFC Coordinators, and the Advisory Board. The Child Development Supervisor is responsible for initiating and facilitating duties and tasks described in this document.

The CDFC Child Development Supervisor (lead teacher) will be evaluated by the CDFC administration with consultation by HDFS Faculty, Families and peers.

Maintains frequent contact with CDFC administrative team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum

  • Responsible for the planning and implementation of the classroom curriculum, following the Center’s philosophy, and NAEYC’s Developmentally Appropriate Practices. Complete daily reflection sheets and weekly goals. Submit an article each month for the Center’s newsletter, informing parents of classroom curriculum and topics related to early childhood.
  • Observe and evaluate children’s developmental progress, document all relevant information, share information with parents and administration, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Provide daily communication with parents ensuring they are adequately informed of their child’s educational experiences, overall growth and development. Conduct parent conferences at least twice a year. Address parental concerns and issues as they arise. Serve as a resource for parents, providing them with support, education and information as needed.
  • Continue professional development by attending appropriate workshops and conferences. A minimum of 20 hours is required each year. Membership in NAEYC is strongly recommended. Must remain current with CPR and First Aid Certification and Gateways membership and Credential.

Campus Child Care Requirements

  • Actively participate in the overall planning, development, and implementation of the mission, philosophy, and goals of the Center.
  • Contribute to the Center’s licensing, accreditation, assessment, and evaluation processes.
  • Set appropriate rules and limits, and supervise activities to ensure the safety and well-being of the children at all times.
  • Practice positive guidance techniques adhering to the Center’s philosophy and policies, licensing regulations, and accreditation criteria.
  • Maintain cooperative and professional relationships with outside professionals and agencies that interact with the Center.
  • Maintain a clean and attractive classroom, performing and delegating housekeeping tasks.

Program Support

  • Responsible for the supervision and maintenance of classroom records and documentation related to children’s health, growth and development.
  • Participate in the interviewing process of new hires. Participate in their orientation process and mentor new teachers, as assigned.
  • Attend designated staff meetings, parent programs and workshops.
  • Responsible for the planning and implementation of meetings and programs, including professional staff workshops.
  • Attend designated university and Student Affairs & Enrollment Management events when it does not interfere with the functioning of the classroom.
  • Assume administrative duties, as assigned.
  • Work varying hours to meet the overall needs of the Center.

Goals of the Center

  • Provide leadership and direction for classroom staff. Responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the classroom. Maintain good communication with the classroom staff in an effort to provide a quality child care program.
  • Provide daily communication, supervision, orientation and training of student staff.
  • Model positive and respectful interactions with children, parents, and staff.
  • Responsible for the overall supervision of classroom activities.
  • Responsible for the evaluation process for student staff.
  • Supervise and provide a quality teaching experience for undergraduate student interns, as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

  1. Possession of credentials required by Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for employment as a Child Care Worker in a licensed child care facility .   2. (A) Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or related fields, including 18 semester hours of credit for course work directly related to child development and/or child care, 6 of them for the period from birth to age six

    OR

    (B) Two (2) years of experience comparable to that gained at the lower level of this series and 18 additional semester hours of credit for college course work directly related to child development and/or child care

**Note: Courses that cover the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of young children and/or courses relating specifically to the group care and education of young children; e.g., curriculum, programming, pre-school teaching methods, discipline and child management, observation of children, working with parents, health, nutrition and safety, and supervised teaching experience for which credit is earned (such as student teaching, clinical experience, or practicum).

  1. Bachelor’s degree in child development. early childhood education or related field
  2. Knowledge of and prior experiences with the National Association for the Education of Young Children accreditation process
  3. Demonstrated professional work experience working with children Birth-age 5
  4. One year of teaching experience in a mixed age classroom setting
  5. Ability to receive a Gateways ECE level 3 or higher credential within 6 months of hire.
  6. Ability to receive a Gateways Infant toddler level 2 or higher credential within 6 months of hire.
  7. Course work in Child Development, Study and Assessment of Young Children, Infant and Toddler curriculum, Curriculum and Assessment of Children Birth – 5yrs, Principals of Guiding Young Children, and Family Relations.
  8. Knowledge of Teaching Strategies and Gold Assessment tool
  9. Strong team work skills
  10. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  11. Strong organization and time management skills
  12. Strong leadership skills.

  • Must be physically and emotionally able to work with young children and supervise their activities.
  • Physically- Able to lift 30 lbs, sit on the floor, stand, lifting objects and children at various ages and abilities. Move quickly to supervise and stay with active children.
  • Emotionally: Able to put a child’s needs above your own, able to support growth and development of emotional skills and a deep level of patience and maturity.
