Position Title: Accountant
Department: Finance and Accounting
Status: Active/Full-time/Exempt
Reports To: Executive Director

Primary Function:

Congregation Ner Tamid, a reform Synagogue in Henderson, Nevada, is looking for an accountant who responsible overseeing all aspects of our accounting and finance functions.

The accountant will be responsible for day-to-day accounting, such as entering and reviewing donations, accounts payable and accounts receivable, reconciling accounts and credit card statements, data entry, filing, etc. Other responsibilities will include some human resources management & administration.

The accountant also works with the President, Treasurer, Executive Director on preparing and administering the annual operating budget and the capital budget. The accountant is also expected to recommend strategic changes to processes and systems that will keep the finance department at the leading edge of quality and efficiency.

Additionally, the accountant is responsible for the accounting operations of the non-profit, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk and ensure that reported results comply with GAAP.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive, record, and monitor all disbursements, properly allocating such payments to appropriate budgets, and prepare monthly budget reports.
  • Receive, record, and monitor all income and prepare regular reports on cash flow, disbursements, and fund balances.
  • Receives and reconciles all bank statements and prepares financial reports.
  • Develop and present policies and procedures that are designed to enhance income, control operating costs, and provide controls for the handling and disbursement of the nonprofit’s finances.
  • Preparing, then implementing internal fiscal controls, policies and procedures.
  • Work with non-profit’s outside accountants in preparing financial statements and reviewing existing financial practices – preparing for reviews or audits.
  • Communicate with donors, students, parents, and vendors on all questions and issues pertaining to non-profit finances – outstanding bills, reduced rates for tuition or dues, etc.
  • Manage with utmost sensitivity and confidentiality all scholarships and grants.
  • Monitor perpetual trust funds and stay abreast of all matters concerning the trust.
  • Prepare and distribute financial reports as required in advance of Budget & Finance Committee and Investment Committee meetings.
  • Develop tracking system to report employee numbers and duties to the workman’s comp.
  • Manage accounts receivable and payable
  • Manage payroll
  • Human Resources – Keep a file on each employee, track PTO, insurances – health and disability for all employees
  • Assist the Executive Director in sending out monthly statements to donors – review statements and add notes as appropriate
  • Send weekly financial reports on cash flow and accounts payable to the Executive Director, President, Vice President, Treasurer and chair of the finance committee

To be successful in this position, the individual must be very detail oriented, extremely organized, a team player, possess a high energy level and be able to operate well in a busy environment. In addition, it is essential that this individual have mathematics proficiency, a proven ability to initiate ideas and follow through on tasks, be an excellent communicator and possess the interpersonal skills to work well with a variety of volunteer and staff leaders. Proficiency in Quickbooks and Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel) is necessary.

  • Keen attention to details with an analytical ability to ensure the accuracy of financial information
  • Ability to effectively present financial data and information to Senior Management

Work Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in accounting or equivalent degree (required).
  • Minimum 3-5 years accounting experience.
