Job Description:

This is a senior level General Manager position within Transportation that provides strategic direction and leadership, with operational responsibility for International Transportation services across Caterpillar business units globally. The General Manager of International Transportation is accountable for delivering day-to-day results (quality, performance, and cost), meeting or exceeding agreed upon key performance indicators (KPIs) and designing holistic transportation solutions for a complex network across all modes of conveyance (road, rail, parcel, ocean, air).

The position leads a team of global transportation professionals in Belgium, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, United States, and Singapore, and oversees regional freight control tower operations, encompassing:

  • End-to-end international shipment coordination

  • Operational oversight, performance management, and relationship management of freight forwarders, carriers, and other transportation suppliers

  • Capacity planning and management by flow and/or lane

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

Understands the relationship between business drivers and transportation, especially for international freight flows within and across all regions (Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa, Middle East). Incorporates market insights and market feedback into agile transportation solutions.

Takes a data-driven approach to manage daily work in process as well as to take a strategic view of the business – volumes, forecasts, headwinds, opportunities.

Understands the importance of compliance on transportation and trade flows, ensuring team and nominated service providers approach day-to-day work with a compliance mindset.

Approaches problem solving in a structured way, using Lean concepts.

Adeptly interacts and communicates with senior leaders and peers within Caterpillar as well as strategic service providers (Carriers, Forwarders, Brokers). Prioritizes transparent, data-driven communications to teams, leaders, peers, and customers.

Defines, tracks, and maintains accountability for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Provides accurate and timely reporting on KPIs, with root cause corrective action analysis reporting for metrics below target.

Ensures fiscal responsibility and forecast accuracy for International Transportation period and variable costs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a Supply Chain or Transportation Management related field

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in Transportation, Logistics, or Supply Chain Management

  • 2+ years of experience using data analytics tools like Tableau or PowerBI

  • Foundational system experience in Supply Chain or Transportation Management or Transportation Visibility systems

  • Previous experience with transportation flows, supply chain management practices, building optimal networks, and the metrics required to successfully manage cost and performance of the network

  • Proven leadership skills including the ability to manage a large global staff, demonstrated success leading teams to deliver complex goals and projects and / or demonstrated success growing and executing logistics capabilities and /or leading and inspiring teams across multiple regions

  • This position requires up to 25% travel (international + domestic)

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Excellent interpersonal and commercial skills to deal with sensitive issues, develop others, or persuade others inside and outside the department to take specific actions

  • First-hand experience using industry-leading transportation management and visibility systems like InforNexus or BlueYonder.

  • Customer relationship management focus, training, or experience

  • Lean, 6 Sigma, or other Continuous Improvement experience

  • Previous experience in trade operations

  • APICS certification

  • Master’s degree in Supply Chain or Business Administration
