Aspen Group Inc. is looking for an experienced Financial Aid Specialist – Military & Vetaran Benefits to join our amazing team in Phoenix, AZ.

Position Description:

The Veteran/Military Benefits and Financial Aid Specialist will primarily focus on providing professional, effective, and efficient customer service to students utilizing Veteran/Military benefits and will assist with the administration of those benefit programs in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with federal/state regulations and institutional policies.

In addition, the Veteran/Military Benefits and Financial Aid Specialist will also assist and support the day-to-day operations of the Financial Aid Processing Team, to include Title IV financial aid processing and advising.

Primary Functions:

  • Advise and assist students regarding Veteran/Military benefits.
  • Process Veteran Affairs (VA) benefit certifications and updates in VA-ONCE.
  • Process requests and updates for Department of Defense (DOD) Tuition Assistance benefits.
  • Review documentation submitted by students for completeness, conflicting information, and eligibility confirmation.
  • Monitor account balances for students using Veteran/Military benefits and contact students regarding out-of-pocket amounts owed and past due balances.
  • Answer questions from internal staff regarding Veteran/Military benefits.
  • Collaborate with the VA, Debt Management Center, and military branches to resolve eligibility questions, payment issues, and other discrepancies.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of federal, state, and institutional policies governing VA, DOD, and Title IV student aid programs.
  • Complete reporting and submission requirements for federal, state, or institutional purposes.
  • Support compliance audits and perform data collection.

Additional Functions

  • The following functions are performed by the Financial Aid Processing Team and the Veteran/Military Benefits and Financial Aid Specialist will assist with one or more of these functions.
  • Complete ISIR, Verification, and C-Code review.
  • Determine eligibility for and process federal, state, and/or institutional awards.
  • Determine disbursement eligibility for federal, state, and/or institutional awards.
  • Perform credit balance calculations on student accounts and request refunds/stipends to be issued.
  • Perform Return of Title IV funds calculations.
  • Advise and assist students regarding Title IV financial aid eligibility and student account inquiries.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Two years of Veteran/Military Benefits processing and/or advising experience.
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Two years of financial aid advising or financial aid processing experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problems solving skills.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, and a high level of professional integrity.
  • Ability to react to customer and business needs with a sense of urgency.
  • Attention to detail and quality focused.
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects and tasks simultaneously to meet deadlines.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with supervisor, University staff, students, and the community.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills in a dynamic, constantly changing environment.
  • Proficient with VA-ONCE, DOD Tuition Assistance portals, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and electronic mail software.
